Due to the severe armed conflict in Sudan starting on April 15, 2023, all project activities came to a halt. The project was eventually discontinued at the end of June 2023.
In the past 30 years, public space in Sudan has not been accessible for the general public. Discourse and cultural life had to shift to private spaces. The reclaiming of public space, its redefinition and reuse is the goal of urban development initiatives and neighbourhood committees. Despite the commitment of these neighbourhood networks, their resources are severely limited. With the project "NEXT LEVEL-Fariq" ("Fariq" means team or neigbourhood; Sudanese-Arabic), neighbourhoods are given the opportunity to develop these public spaces, make them more attractive and safer, and thus shape them as places of community. This project supports residents' own initiatives and creative ideas for upgrading and revitalising public spaces in their neighbourhoods.
