Stories – Riddles of the City is the name of the play by the Sudanese director, Jasour Abu Algasim, which was staged in the autumn of 2019 in the Youth Palace of Omdurman. Divided up on three stages, the arrangement symbolises the three Sudanese revolutions of 1964, 1985 and 2018/19. The play centres on the active role of women in the respective revolutions, how this changed significantly over time and becomes a symbol of the strong, courageous and self-confident woman. In a dynamic act, the audience moves with the actors from stage to stage while the various revolutions are addressed.
The fund offered more than 15 actors the opportunity to present extraordinary personalities and outstanding achievements that represent an answer to the question of artistic beauty after the revolution. Jasour speaks with pride and gratitude about finally be able to implement his long-awaited project after three years of planning. His project also helped visualise the political and social present in Sudan after the revolution, with a range of complexities that have surfaced from historical, ethnic and geographic heritage. In this context, the team around the theatre-maker dealt with experiences in the relationships between freedom, justice and the value of the human being in many ways and with differences that can contribute to the legacy of an open and in-depth dialogue.
