Founded in 1982, the Akdeniz University, located in Antalya, marked its 40th anniversary in December 2022. The institution boasts 24 faculties, seven institutes, 12 vocational schools, a conservatory, and over 60 research centers. In a notable study by Stanford University in 2022, 17 researchers from Akdeniz University were recognized among the top 2% of the world's most influential scientists.
With approximately 67,000 students, including 2,489 international scholars, Akdeniz University stands as a hub for diverse learning. The university's hospital has earned both national and international acclaim, particularly in the pioneering field of organ transplantation, renowned for its innovation and success.
In January 2011, Akdeniz University achieved a significant milestone by conducting Turkey's first full face transplant, led by the esteemed Turkish surgeon, Prof. Dr. Ömer Özkan, and his proficient team.
This university plays a pivotal role in Southern Turkey, hosting the region's sole German Studies department and a School of Foreign Languages offering a wide array of language courses to students across faculties. This is particularly crucial given the presence of about 450 German companies in the Antalya region, highlighting the paramount importance of German as a foreign language in the tourism sector.
In 2019, Akdeniz University established the Center for German Studies (ALMARUM), further solidifying its commitment to academic excellence and global engagement.
