Online Workshop: April 11th, 2024 at 6pm EST

This workshop is designed for German teachers seeking to integrate artificial intelligence into their language education methodologies.

The workshop "Why AI and German? It's the Future!" is a dynamic opportunity for educators to delve into the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in language instruction. It begins by demystifying AI, highlighting its practical applications beyond science fiction and emphasizing its role in shaping personalized and engaging learning experiences. Participants will explore how AI can cater to individual students' needs and preferences, ultimately enhancing the effectiveness of German language teaching.

Throughout the workshop, educators will discover concrete ways to integrate AI into their teaching practice. From exploring AI-powered language learning apps and conversational chatbots to designing innovative lesson plans that leverage AI technology, participants will gain hands-on experience with these cutting-edge tools. The workshop encourages active participation, allowing educators to experiment with AI resources and adapt them to their own classrooms.

By the end of the workshop, educators will leave equipped with practical strategies and resources to seamlessly integrate AI into their German language instruction. They will have access to detailed lesson plan templates, recommendations for AI apps and websites, and tips for effectively incorporating these tools into their curriculum. Ultimately, the workshop aims to empower educators to create dynamic and engaging language learning environments that harness the full potential of AI, ensuring that their students receive a transformative educational experience.

The workshop will be held in German and is part of the SPARK Spring Workshop Series open to all teachers of German.

Dr. Simone Smala is the co-author of Languages and Social Cohesion (Meier & Smala, 2021), the first comprehensive transdisciplinary review of research into social contexts in which decision makers and researchers consider social cohesion in the presence of linguistic diversity. Her background in Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) in bilingual immersion education settings led her to ask questions about natural language processing, machine translation and more broadly, AI in Education, and what this means for the role of learning modern languages in young people's formation of identity. She argues that learning a second (or third etc) language is a human right and contributes significantly to our enchantment with the world.
