NATURAL DIVISIONS is a concert curated by Broken Frames Syndicate that highlights nature as a compositional concept and attempts to break down divisions, both natural and human-contrived, that bring controversy into our world.
Nature-evoking pieces such as Nelson’s “Deep Field of Violet” and Hallik’s “To Become a Tree” center in on dealing with nature on a visceral level. Contrastingly, Lee’s “A Little Night Music" and Coleman’s “Rubispheres” describe certain specific scenes in nature and society, and de Castro-Robinson’s “Chaos of Delight IV” continues a series of works inspired by New Zealandic birdsongs.
At the center of the program lies Sascha Blondeau’s “Urphänomen” (Primordial Phenomenon), which would imply the beginning of humanity. “Urphänomen’s” unbridled intensity evokes the chaotic origins of our universe. To round out the program, all performers will take part in Oliveros’ “Thirteen Change”, a 13-sentence, improvisatory, text-based composition whose individual phrases evoke specific but profound images, celebrating nature and humanity’s wonderful diversity.
All composers in the program bring a different outlook to reality, coming from lands and cultures from around the world, but they share a similar language. To all, nature is an important part of our lives, and through art and music, perhaps, we can bring a higher awareness towards its appreciation.
