Soloists: Frank Peter Zimmermann, Christian Gerhaher
Ludwig van Beethoven
Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in D major, op. 61
Frank Peter Zimmermann violin
Gustav Mahler
Songs from Des Knaben Wunderhorn (Selection)
Christian Gerhaher baritone
With Beethoven's only contribution to the genre of the violin concerto, Zimmermann interprets a work that violinists initially described as unplayable and musicologists later described as the ideal case of a solo concerto. In fact, the composition places the highest technical demands on its soloist and dazzles (especially in the first movement) with its symphonic structures. To show us the latter is the task of Daniel Harding, who after assisting Claudio Abbado and Sir Simon Rattle quickly rose to the ranks of the younger generation of conductors and has been artistically associated with the Berliner Philharmoniker since 1996.
