Goethe Pop Up Houston

15 December 1915 "Small Village in France"

Our doors are officially open – We invite you to join us in celebrating the opening of the Goethe Pop Up Houston.

Our launch party marks the opening of a print exhibition of Otto Schubert’s field postcards. While serving in World War One, Schubert painted on dozens of military-issued postcards – producing a kind of visual diary of his war experiences on the Western Front.

University of Houston professor Dr. Irene Guenther will give a talk contextualizing Schubert’s works within the wider framework of World War One art and its resonance today:

As innumerable conflicts, catastrophic hunger, and broken spirits envelop the globe, the works of German artists who felt compelled to bear witness to war and its aftermath are as necessary and relevant to us today as they were then.

We’re honored to have originals from the series field postcards on view for the opening. The print exhibition will remain open until February 22, 2019.

In partnership with Brazos Bookstore, signed copies of Dr. Guenther’s book Postcards from the Trenches: A German Soldier’s Testimony of the Great War will be available for purchase.

Hors d'oeuvres and drinks will be catered by Butter & Company. We kindly ask that you RSVP at
