On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the death of Rosa Luxemburg, we are hosting a film screening of Margarethe von Trotta’s film Rosa Luxemburg (1986). The film depicts the life story of this thinker and activist of the international left, portrayed in the film by the great actress Barbara Sukowa.

Amidst the growing militarization that preceded World War I, Rosa stood out as an example of uncompromising anti-militarism. As a theorist and an activist, as a feminist and a nature lover, as a public speaker and a prisoner, she lived a moving and revolutionary life.

For their amazing work on this film, Sukowa was awarded Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival and von Trotta was nominated for the Palme d’Or.

The event is co-hosted by the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung – New York Office and the Goethe-Institut New York.
