Concert with interactive video performance
Paradigm
With the visual artists Triệu Minh Hải and Ngô Thu Hương, the violinist Nguyễn Ngọc Đức, the pianist Trần Thu Thảo and the cellist Bùi Hà Miên.
Talking about Paradigm in this multimedia performance aims to look closer at a thought pattern which is of great importance for Vietnamese culture. On this occasion it is about the worship of the Mẫu (mother) and its origins from archaic times and the tradition of feudalism.
The theme is expressed through the trio (violin, cello and piano) interacting with sound recordings and a 3-channel video installation. The latter revolves around aspects of East Asian philosophy of the universe, of Confucian ideology and its afterlife today, of Vietnamese folklore and spiritual effects of the Đạo Mẫu (adoration of the mother goddesses) for Vietnam. The performance seeks to transcend the boundaries between East and West, tradition and modernity.
The performance re-questions whether there is a dividing line between the above extremes, where the intersections are, and the goal of the "discussion" is to find personal identity among the social identity. How does an individual identity really exist in a multitude of different cultural overlays and how will variations of each affect the culture?
