Thandiwe Mqokeli
Thandiwe Mqokeli is a theatre maker, dancer, dance teacher, choreographer and founder of Washaa Summart Holiday Fun Programme, a children’s holiday programme operating in the rural areas. Raised in Molteno, in the Eastern Cape of South Africa, she studied Performing Arts at Lovedale Public College and trained her artistry at the Steve Biko Centre under the direction of Mandla Mbothe and Lulama Masimini. In 2015 her journey as a dancer, choreographer and in outreach teaching started growing as she went to further her training at Jazzart Dance Theatre Company. Thandiwe is a freelance artist that wrote and performed her one woman show, MaMela in 2018 that was one of the winning pieces at the Kuwahamba Women’s Festival in Johannesburg. This piece had a run in Cape Town, and was presented at the uHambo Festival. Thandiwe has performed in a number of festivals, including the National Arts Festival, where she performed a puppet show directed by Rob Van Vuuren, Florence and Watson and Origins; directed by Janni Young. She currently works as an outreach teacher at the Windybrow Arts Centre, while travelling the world with the Dance Factory, Dada Masilo’s Giselle and a new production The Sacrifice.
