Cultural Exchange

At the Goethe-Institut, we foster cultural exchange and dialogue, bringing people together to explore diverse perspectives. Through a rich array of programs, workshops, and discussions, we engage with current challenges and cultural trends both locally and globally.

Imagining Impacts

The significance of cultural relations, along with artistic and heritage practices, is widely acknowledged. However, there is limited research specifically addressing this within Sub-Saharan Africa. Imagining Impacts is a research initiative undertaken by the Goethe-Institut South Africa and the University of Cape Town’s African Centre for Cities, aimed at filling this research gap.

Power Talks

Can a European cultural institution actually play a role in the cultural landscape of Africa…are cultural institutes situated north on the globe now confined to being pure donors…or can they share in the dialogue of the south [and] ask to partake in, or even help shape, processes that are decidedly emancipatory?

Cultural work must remain independent!

Organisations such as the Goethe-Institut must not become the ‘extended arm’ of the government, particularly in difficult political times. Tests of conviction and moral imperialism will not help to overcome crises.
