Curatorial Consultant

The Goethe-Institut in Johannesburg seeks a curatorial consultant to develop a concept and feasibility study for the development of their residency programme LAPA.

ROLE AND SCOPE OF WORK

Development of a curatorial concept and feasibility study for the residency LAPA. This is a freelance position (running until the end of December 2024)

Scope of work – The Goethe-Institut in South Africa launched a pop-up space and a pan-african residency programme in 2021. The new space will offer opportunities for experimentation, networking and for artistic collaboration and serve as a place for discussions and exchange of creative processes.
The aim is to create a place for the cultural scenes of the city, where artistic works can be shown, discourse can take place or simply time can be spent. 
The residency programme needs to be evaluated in order to be developed further and new developments at the Goethe-Institut and throughout Johannesburg have to be considered.

KEY RESPONIBILITIES
  • Evaluation of the programme
  • Evaluation of the space
  • Search for third party funding
  • Market analysis and mapping of programmes in Johannesburg
  • Identification of potential new partnerships
  • conceptualisation, of the cultural programme in the space and residency programme
  • development of project budgets according to Goethe-Institut guidelines
REQUIRED SKILLS
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Strong knowledge of the visual arts scene in South Africa and Africa
  • Experience working on big-scale arts programmes
  • Experience in administration, especially of cultural projects
  • Highly proficient with MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Knowledge of innovative PR measures
  • In-depth understanding of operational characteristics, services and activities of arts development projects
  • Ability to work independently and willingness to travel
  • Permission to work in South Africa
PROFILE
  • Educated to graduate level or higher
  • Minimum four (4) years of relevant working experience
  • Non-South African applicants need to have a valid work permit for South Africa
