Comics / Graphic Novels in Ethiopia

Ethiopia's centuries-old experience in art can be described as the forerunner of today's comics. Religion and history were preserved through visual art, which consisted of individual panels of artwork and inscriptions. In contrast, comics in modern Ethiopia have been used primarily by NGOs as a means of sharing important information in areas such as health and education. However, comics are rarely found in public places such as schools. An independent survey of local children confirms that while most have heard of comics, they have never come into contact with them. If they have, however, it has been mainly in the context of past HIV campaigns. The video highlights the desire for regionally produced comics, and in particular comics in Amharic, as a plan for the future.
