Eko Fresh is a rapper and with his video “Aber” he takes a stance against racism and promotes intercultural understanding. He shows that rap is definitely more than just "fat cars" and "bling". Originally, rap was a form of cultural-political protest. With "Aber," the rapper clearly positions himself in the racism debate in Germany. In the video, two men with extreme positions clash: a xenophobe and AFD voter and an angry prejudicial German Turk played by the actors Patrick Mölleken and Yunus Cumartpay. In the third part of the rap video, Eko Fresh acts as a mediator. He makes it clear that there is not always just "black or white". He concludes with confidence: "My opinion, bro, whether religion or tradition to live in one country is hard, but you can do it”.
The word "but" is a discourse strategy. Eko Fresh unmasks it as an apparent universal weapon against other opinions and a license for agitation and hatred. Sentences such as "I've got nothing against foreigners, but . . .", "I'm not a Nazi, but . . ." or "I love Germany, but you Germans are . . ." reveal the everyday racism that exists in many areas of society. The rap video “Aber” is extraordinarily precise in juxtaposing the resentments surrounding the integration debate in Germany and it also promotes communication and mutual respect. The video was awarded the special prize for social responsibility by the European Web Video Academy in cooperation with the EU initiative
