KINO! Film Salon is a monthly online club to discuss films from Germany.

How it works: Each month we choose a German film currently available to stream on U.S. platforms, watch it independently, and come together for a hosted conversation with other fans of German cinema.

In our November session, we’ll discuss Wolfgang Becker’s cult comedy Good Bye, Lenin! (2003). Set in 1990, the story centers around Alex, a young man caring for his mother as she emerges from a long coma induced by heart attack. However, the East Germany that she knew no longer exists, and Alex must protect her from another attack by maintaining the illusion that the Berlin Wall is still standing, and that state Communism is alive and well. It’s an absurd, ingenious story told with great pathos and humor, with an endearingly frazzled lead performance by Daniel Brühl in his breakout role.

Good Bye, Lenin! was a 2003 award-season favorite. Its more than thirty awards include the Blue Angel for Best European Film at the Berlinale as well as German Film Awards for Outstanding Feature Film, Best Actor (Daniel Brühl), Best Actress (Katrin Sass), Best Direction (Wolfgang Becker), and Best Screenplay.

Hosted by Jim Kolmar

Jim programs for SXSW and Trinidad & Tobago Film Festival, and was a founding committee member of Festival Internacional de Cine Tulum (FICTU). He has participated in numerous international festival juries, panels, and committees.
