Discussion about Sherry Hormann’s 2019 film A Regular Woman

KINO! Film Salon is a monthly online club to discuss films from Germany.

How it works: Each month we choose a German film or series currently available to stream on U.S. platforms, watch it independently, and come together for a hosted conversation with other fans of German film.

In our October session, we will talk about Sherry Hormann’s 2019 film A Regular Woman which explores the devastating circumstances around a real-life Berlin “honour killing” that took place in 2005. Register Almila Bagriacik plays Aynur, a young woman of Turkish-Kurdish descent who breaks from the strictures of her devout family by pursuing love, work, and self-determination. Bagriacik narrates the film as Aynur, after her murder takes place. It’s a startling innovation that incriminates everyone in its caustic, calm retelling of the traumatic events. A shockingly blunt indictment of religious misogyny, A Regular Woman is a visually striking and deeply sad exploration of how easily family and autonomy can unravel in the face of blithe dogma and unexamined loyalties.

Hosted by Jim Kolmar

Jim programs for SXSW and Trinidad & Tobago Film Festival, and was a founding committee member of Festival Internacional de Cine Tulum (FICTU). He has participated in numerous international festival juries, panels, and committees.
