Andreas Ströhl dirige, a partir do Goethe-Institut de Joanesburgo, os Institutos Goethe da região da África Subsaariana. Anteriormente, dirigiu, a partir do Goethe-Institut de Washington D.C., os Institutos Goethe dos EUA, do Canadá e do México. Entre 2003 e 2011, foi diretor do Festival de Cinema de Munique. É autor de uma tese de doutorado sobre a teoria da cultura de Vilém Flusser.
