Goethe-Institut Nairobi
Tech X Trust
For the Kultursymposium Weimar 2023, the Goethe-Institut Kenya and its partners the Elephant and Inuka Kenya examine the question of trust in relation to technology, drawing from the Kenyan context and perspectives from local experts and communities. The project includes a film screening, online and in person panel discussions, and community outreach programmes.
The opening event started with a screening of the award-winning documentary The Cleaners. Directed by Hans Block and Moritz Riesewieck, the film touches on the ethics around content moderation and its effects on the people whose job it is to filter through potentially disturbing content.
This discourse on technology and trust was expanded by four authors who wrote articles on various topics, such as the continued marginalisation and bias caused by algorithms. As part of our outreach programme, we worked with Code for Africa to train 20 community representatives in identifying and reporting fake news and misinformation.
