In times of growing uncertainty and multiple economic, ecological and political crises around the world, trust seems more important than ever. The exhibition You know you’re human focusses on the individual and sees itself as a joint statement by artists from Ukraine and Berlin seeking to condemn Russia's war of aggression on Ukraine as a cultural breach.

The title of the exhibition is taken from the famous poem by the Ukrainian poet Vasyl Symonenko, “Ти знаєш, що ти – людина” (You know you're human). The poem is part of the official curriculum in Ukraine, where it pays tribute to the life and uniqueness of each individual. Today, in these times of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, these simple but powerful verses call with particular urgency for humanity, solidarity, trust and cohesion. They remind us once again that, despite the elusive monstrosity of war, every life counts.

The core of the exhibition is the work of Ukrainian photographers, curated by Kataryna Filyuk. They give an insight into the changes that have taken place in Ukrainian society since the 1960s – up to the recent months of the sacrificial struggle of Ukrainians for their country. Kataryna Filyuk is the winner of the Ukrainian Cultural Institute’s international “Visualize” programme, supported by the Goethe-Institut and the Goethe-Institut in Exile. The exhibition will also bring together a variety of artistic video works from Berlin, curated by Rachel Rits-Volloch.
