Millipedes walk using what is called metachronal rhythm. This appears as a traveling wave in the millipede's legs, progressing from rear to front of its body. A specific network of neurons called central pattern generators (CPGs) produces the sequence of automatic muscle movements. This rhythm repeats over time. Most arthropods walk this way, but the millipede's plenitude of legs makes the pattern clearly visible. This short was filmed in 4K macro slow motion through a collaboration between Wonder Science, Radiant Images and IDT Vision. Buchla synth music by Johnny Woods.
