Carla Hustedt leads the Ethics of Algorithms project of the Bertelsmann Stiftung, Europe’s largest operational think tank. Together with partners from diverse disciplines and sectors she and her team are conducting research on the societal consequences of algorithmic decision-making while also working on practical solutions for putting machines in the service of humankind. In 2019, Carla Hustedt coordinated the development of the Algo.Rules, a set of nine principles for the ethical development of algorithmic decision-making systems and consulted the German parliament’s AI Enquete Commission on the issue of AI transparency. She is also a member of the advisory board of the Center for Advanced Internet Studies (CAIS) and the German Chapter Lead for the Women in AI Ethics Initiative.
