Tracing presence on land

Sabine is playing bass flute whilst wearing a green dress and a woven bag that has many colours: pink, blue, gold, white and black. She is standing on a terrace, and there is a tree with a very large trunk and bright green leaves behind her, as well as a view far into the distance. | © Aaron Perez

A black and white photo of Emilio. He has short, dark hair and a short beard. He is wearing a black shirt and looking to the bottom right corner of the frame. The background of the photo is black. | © Jacek Chmiel

Josten is playing the saxophone, facing straight at the camera whilst standing knee-deep in a river. It is dusk and the sky is blue and pink, with a few small clouds. The city skyline of Boorloo is visible in the background, as are the green hills of Kaartagarup (King's Park). In the foreground of the shot there is a microphone recording Josten. | © Emma Daisy

Their project “Tracing presence on land” is a sonic-musical diary of their long collaboration, carrying the stories and echoes of the places they have worked in together. Field recordings and collective outdoor soundings made in their respective homelands in Mexico, Germany and Australia are folded into a tapestry with live instrumentation that imagines new ways of relating to place.
Their project involves short residencies each in Paretz, Fünfseenland, Meelup (Dunsborough) and Yagan mia (Wireless Hill, Boorloo/Perth), followed by a concert tour of Australia and Aotearoa/New Zealand including performances at the Audible Edge Festival of Exploratory Music, COMA, the Audio Foundation and Pyramid Club. Contributions from human and non-human collaborators throughout the journey will be woven into the composition.
Elements of the development of this project have been supported by the Western Australian government through the Department of Local Government, Sports and Cultural Industries, Goolugatup Heathcote, and Tone List.
