The session “Cutting Through the Noise” set out to offer some conceptual frameworks, identify challenges, and position some approaches to resolving the tensions that emerge when thinking through the ideas of authorship, authority and authenticity in our encounters with digital technologies, frameworks and platforms. The session is facilitated by Dr Nishant Shah, Director of Research at the ArtEZ University of the Arts, and Dr Padmini Ray Murray, independent design researcher and founder of Design Beku, a feminist design collective.

Using the examples of digital lighting and digital communication, Lorenz Pöllmann, Professor of Media and Event Management at the University of Applied Sciences for Media, Communication and Management in Berlin, shows us that there is no such thing as ´the digital´ or ´the digitalisation´. The digital transformation is nothing new, it is a process which has been happening in phases and in various areas for years. Since the non-systemic use of digital options ultimately leads to a lack of connectivity within an institution, he involves guests to point out why networking, cooperation and exchange are key for cultural institutions in the digital age. Based on the digital strategy canvas, Lorenz Pöllmann suggests starting with a vision in order to implement a digital strategy. Furthermore, he explains why cultural institutions must reposition themselves more strongly as educational brands as well as media brands. The video closes with greetings from the Secretary General of the Goethe-Institut.

In her role as artistic director, Dr Nora O Murchú introduces transmediale, a festival for media art and digital culture in Berlin and one of the key leading international events for discourse and critical reflection on post-digital theory and practice. At the core of the festival is a philosophy that continuously rethinks what culture is, where it takes place and what modes of engagement it offers for audiences. The COVID-19 pandemic has substantially impacted the cultural and creative sectors, with festivals being most affected writes Rashmi Dhanwani. Live events migrated to online and hybrid forms, while festivals and cultural venues across the world made their content free and accessible during the first few months of the lockdown, and millions of audiences moved online for cultural consumption. In light of the changes, there is a need to understand changing audience behaviours in the realm of audience mapping, data analytics and engagement. Three arts audience experts from across the world were interviewed on how to respond to these changes and navigate the evolution of the festival sector in the coming few years.
