Travel grant
Music-Teaching Projects Abroad

Goethe-Instituts abroad and their partner institutions work with musicians to lay the foundations for diverse forms of cultural exchange: we provide funding for projects to build individual musical skills and encourage participation in collaborative ensemble music activities.

Conditions of Funding

We provide funding for professional musicians and music teachers based in Germany who are interested in putting on educational music projects abroad.

We provide support for participatory and collaborative music projects abroad designed to improve individual learners’ music skills or encourage participation in ensemble music activities.

Funding is available for up to five teachers per project. Chamber music or band-based projects are also eligible for funding. Travel grants are available only for those actively participating in the project in an artistic or teaching capacity. For reasons of sustainability, each music project should involve about five days of workshops. Concert performances may be envisaged, but the focus of the project should be on teaching music.

We generally cover part, but not all, of the travel expenses.

Benefit projects (fundraisers), projects within the framework of political educational work, travel for tourist purposes or family visits, school/university projects, folklore events, and projects organized by commercial promoters or with party-political, religious or ideological content are not eligible for funding.

  • Musical and educational quality of the project
  • Coherent concept and convincing statement of your motivation
  • Your transcultural and methodological skills
  • Teaching and workshop experience
  • Equal balance of project partnership with the partner organization abroad
  • Consideration of sustainability criteria in the choice of means of transport: We prefer to support rail travel, especially within Europe for travel times of up to seven hours. We assess the eligibility of additional costs compared to air fares.

  • Completed online application form
  • Artist biography including certification and/or references to prove prior teaching and workshop experience
  • Informative and compelling project description incl. motivation and music-teaching approach
  • Detailed schedule
  • Detailed financing plan
  • Official confirmation from project partner abroad and statement of their on-site commitments
  • Two quotes for travel fares (from Internet portals, travel agencies, etc.) as proof of a particularly inexpensive itinerary
  • In the case of air travel, the offer with the lowest CO2 emissions is to be included as well

Projects for which travel arrangements (e.g. flights) have already been booked before applying for a grant are generally not eligible for funding. So, before making any binding reservations, you must submit an informal e-mail requesting a dispensation to make advance travel arrangements. Bear in mind, however, that this dispensation does not constitute a promise to award any funding.

Inclusion and sustainability

We feel it's very important to enable people with disabilities to participate fully in arts and culture and strongly encourage disabled artists to apply. We provide partial funding to make music projects accessible to people with special needs.

Making music projects sustainable is a high priority for us. So we’d be glad to advise you on ways to minimize your project’s carbon footprint.
