Multilingualism is the basis of our work. We at the Commission are very committed to promoting language diversity, which is very important to identity and mutual understanding. EU laws are published in all 24 official EU languages, and every EU citizen is entitled to address any EU institution in any of those languages. Another important task is to safeguard minority languages, which also serves to shore up mutual respect. At the Commission, we also seek to promote language skills. According to one study, eight out of ten Slovenes speak a foreign language or two – many even three. Which means we’re close to the EU Commission's goal: for all Europeans to learn at least two foreign languages.
