The understandable desire for political unanimity, for a united Europe in the sense of an EU that speaks with one voice on the global stage, doesn’t apply to culture. On the contrary, it must spare Europe's diversity, for Europe owes its appeal precisely to its historical, cultural, social and culinary diversity, which finds particular expression in its multilingualism.
