Die Revolution von Haiti war ein Testfall für die Ideale der Französischen Revolution: Was taugt das Versprechen, dass alle Menschen Brüder sind und dieselben unverbrüchlichen Rechte genießen, solange es Kolonien und Sklaverei gibt? Nichts, fanden die versklavten Bewohner*innen von Haiti und rebellierten 1791 gegen die Besitzer der Zuckerrohrplantagen. Ihrem Anführer Toussaint Louverture widmete der antillanische Schriftsteller Édouard Glissant 1961 „Monsieur Toussaint“, ein Theaterstück, das als Dreh- und Angelpunkt für Ouvertures dient. Louis Henderson, Olivier Marboeuf und die Theatergruppe The Living and The Dead Ensemble studieren es in Port-au-Prince ein. Sie filmen sich dabei, und das Ergebnis ist ein Experiment in drei Teilen: eine Recherche auf den Spuren Louvertures, ein Experiment in geteilter Autorschaft und kollektivem Filmemachen, schließlich der Einbruch einer magischen Wirklichkeit, in der die Geister der Toten lebendig bleiben.
