The greater region of Saar-Lor-Lux – also known as the ‘heart of Europe’ – consists of the French-speaking region of Lorraine, the two German federal states of Rhineland-Pfalz and Saarland, the national state of Luxembourg, the Belgian region of Wallonia and Belgium’s German-speaking community. As a reflection of European history, the tri-border region, with a population of 11.3 million, shares common economic interests but also has structural differences.
Various funding mechanisms (the European Regional Development Fund, the ECBM Regulation, INTERREG) aim to overcome legal and administrative obstacles in the cross-border context to improve regional competitiveness and to strengthen territorial collaboration.
Which border-related obstacles have already been successfully eliminated and what challenges does the region still face? What is the reality of life in a region where 200,000 cross-border commuters live and work? What day-to-day cross-border practices have been developed and can they survive current conditions in the midst of the coronavirus crisis?
Hosted by Christoph Roth, Head of Saarland’s representation to the EU, Miguel Avila Albez, Programme Manager EU Policies (including Saarland), DG REGIO, European Commission; Dr Thiemo W. ESER, Director of International Affairs and European Territorial Cooperation, Ministry for Energy, Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and Dr Christian WILLE, a scientist and Head of the coordination office of the cross-border research network UniGR-Center for Border Studies, University of Luxemburg, will engage in discussions on these topics.
