Discussion and reading with Deniz Utlu
Deniz Utlu, who was awarded a Special Mention of the European Prize for Literature on 4 April, reads from his novel "Father's Sea". Numerous guests accepted the joint invitation from the Goethe-Institut Belgium and Matthias Wunderling-Weilbier, Lower Saxony's Minister of State for Federal and European Affairs and Regional Development, and were able to gain an insight into the work of remembering a special father-son relationship during a moderated discussion between Deniz Utlu and Katrin Schmidt, representative of the Europanetzwerk Deutsch. In the subsequent questions from the audience, other topics such as the different images of fathers in different cultures, the process of writing a novel and the current political circumstances in Turkey were discussed. We would like to thank Deniz Utlu for this wonderful evening and the Representation of the State of Lower Saxony to the EU for the excellent cooperation.
TALK AND READING WITH ROBERT MENASSE
On invitation of Europanetzwerk Deutsch, the Representation of the State of Hesse to the EU and the Austrian Cultural Forum Brussels, Robert Menasse read several passages from his EU novel "Die Erweiterung", which was published in 2022 and is a continuation of his novel "Die Hauptstadt", which was awarded with the German Book Prize in 2017. The new novel deals with the European Union's enlargement policy and spans a whole panopticon of human fates, full of historical anecdotes, geographical details and political digressions. In conversation with EU Commissioner Johannes Hahn, Menasse argued for a common European narrative as the basis of a post-national political order. After the closing speech by Dr. Elke Kaschl Mohni, director of the Goethe-Institut Brussels, Robert Menasse took the time to sign books and for personal talks. With about 600 guests, the event was very well attended and continued the next day in Luxembourg at the Institut Pierre Werner.
Network meeting in Brussels and Luxembourg
Alumni of the Europanetzwerk Deutsch came together for a network meeting in Brussels and Luxembourg from 6 to 12 June. The ministerial officials from the EU member states and candidate countries were able to attend individual meetings in the EU institutions as well as a rich political and cultural programme. At the same time, a special course on the greater Saar-Lor-Lux region, also organised by Europanetzwerk Deutsch, took place in Saarbrücken and Luxembourg for EU civil servants and ministerial officials from the EU member states. Both groups met in Luxembourg for a joint programme, such as a panel discussion on cross-border cooperation at the Institut Pierre Werner or a reception at the summer residence of the German ambassador in Luxembourg, which made it possible to implement intensive and sustainable networking with the participation of high-ranking representatives from politics and society.
Herlinde Koelbl as guest in Brussels
Invited by the Europanetzwerk Deutsch, Herlinde Koelbl presented her documentary portrait "Angela Merkel. Portraits 1991-2021" on 09.12.2021 in Brussels. In conversation with Bernd Riegert, Deputy Director of Deutsche Welle in Brussels, she spoke about her annual portrait sessions with Merkel over 30 years. During this period, portraits were created that trace the astonishing rise of the now former Chancellor, who started as a political outsider and became one of the most powerful politicians in the world. After a welcoming address by Martin Kotthaus, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Kingdom of Belgium, the audience was given an insight into Koelbl's work as a photographer, her artistic aspirations and her relationship to Angela Merkel.
