An exhibition on borders
11 June – 1 August 2020, NiMAC

NiMAC (The Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre, Associated with the Pierides Foundation) and Goethe-Institut Cyprus organise and present the exhibition Getting Across at NiMAC from 11 June to 1 August 2020. The exhibition addresses the crucial issues of migration, crossings and borders and showcases works by important artists across international borders, from a cross section of cultures and different historical situations.

The project is curated on the premise that borders are man-made delineations, based on nothing but arbitrary decisions that nevertheless exert a massive, sometimes gruesome impact on individuals. The world seems to be increasingly globalised economically but, at the same time, compartmentalised ethnically, religiously and politically. On top of that, the recent coronavirus pandemic that has been plaguing the entire world creates even bigger problems to the free and unhindered movement of people.

Since the summer of 2015, one topic has overshadowed all other political issues in Europe: the influx of refugees seeking shelter from murderous civil war in countries such as Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Kosovo, Eritrea, Nigeria and the Ukraine, as well as from social and political injustice, oppression and atrocities executed in the name of religion. Many were welcomed by certain governments, but entry was refused to many more by others.

Migration is part of human history. Movements across continents, invasion, colonisation, subjugation of people to foreign rule, resistance against invaders, the building of walls, fortification of borders, hybridisation of identities, emergence of a new populace – all this is related to migration. Migration is not only the migration of people, but also the migration of knowledge, of skills and values and new ways of seeing the world. It is related to suffering and to unforeseeable opportunities, to abominable violence and to new alliances, coalitions and even friendships. Immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers are met with hostility and resistance or are welcomed with empathy and solidarity.
