Christian Petzold gives his own interpretation of the myth of the mysterious water spirit as a modern fairy-tale in a disenchanted world. His Undine frees herself from the role of a powerless woman. She falls in love anew, with Christoph, who dives into the sunken world of a reservoir and whom she has to kill if he leaves her. Petzold reimagines this legend and effortlessly tells the story of a life-or-death love. For this film, Petzold was influenced by Ingeborg Bachmann's story Undine geht (Undine Goes).
