Petzold achieved a haunting modern-day film adaption of Anna Seghers´ 1944 novel of the same name, which she wrote in exile. Georg flees to Marseille and assumes the identity of a writer, who took his own life out of fear of persecution. With the film set in contemporary Marseille where characters from the past are moving around, refugees from the past meet refugees from the present. their stories, transcending time, combine and create a space of transit.
