Sommerkino - Sandra Hüller Retrospective

Goethe-Institut Nicosia

Drama // 121 minutes // 2020

Born in Kosovo, Xhafer (Mišel Maticevic) is a pharmaceutical engineer, married with three children and has been living a middle-class life in a medium-sized German city for years. Gradually, however, he begins to feel that he is being discriminated against and harassed at work. One day, when he finds a dead rat at his front door, he realises once and for all that his colleagues have made a racist remark. From then on, every event, every word, every gesture becomes a clue, even proof, of his suspicions. Xhafer's unease grows from day to day. His German wife Nora (Sandra Hüller), on the other hand, is tired of her husband suspecting mobbing behind every difficulty. Do his colleagues just not like him? Or is there more to their hostility? The incidents that confirm Xhafer's opinion keep piling up. But is it really happening, or is he just imagining things?

"Exil" is a powerful examination of the psychological impact of xenophobia and the fine line between reality and perception.
