A testament to the unwavering spirit of women in Iran, Seven Winters in Tehran is an important investigative film, simultaneously intimate and political. A man tries to rape 19-year-old Reyhaneh Jabbari and she stabs him in self-defense. She is arrested for murder and sentenced to death. In the years that follow she becomes a symbol of resistance and women’s rights.  Her mother and sisters resettled in Germany, where the interviews shown in the film were conducted.

The film is based on the book How to Become a Butterfly: the short, courageous life of my daughter Reyhaneh Jabbari by Shole Pakravan (mother of Reyhaneh Jabbari) and Steffi Niederzoll.
