Language defines the world. But it rarely treats everyone equally. The language used by each individual has the power to perpetuate dangerous stereotypes. This is true also for translations, where the context is as important as the content. It takes a keen eye from a translator to notice the social and historical connotations of the words chosen. Even with artificial intelligence used for machine translations, the same issue emerges. This event concentrates on questions of gender bias: How can we define and analyse gender bias from (machine) translation?

Student of language technology Teemu Pöyhönen (University of Helsinki), translator Kate Sotejeff-Wilson and PhD candidate Anna Merikallio (University of Turku) discuss the topic. Professor of translation studies Maarit Koponen (University of Eastern Finland) hosts the debate.
