Robert Menasse

(born 21.06.1954 in Vienna), author, political essayist, translator

Robert Menasse studied German language and literature, philosophy and political science. His dissertation was entitled "Der Typus des Außenseiters im Literaturbetrieb" (i.e. the outsider in literature). From 1991 to 1998 Robert Menasse lived in Brazil, where he taught Austrian literature as an instructor and as a guest lecturer at the University of São Paulo. His debut novel "Kopfwehmut" (i.e. mind's melancholy) remained unfinished and was never published. His first novel "Sinnliche Gewissheit" (i.e. sensual certainty"), published in 1988, was at the same time the prelude to his "Trilogy of Entgeisterung" (i.e. trilogy of dismay), one of his most important works. In addition to numerous other awards, Menasse received the German Book Prize 2017 for "Die Hauptstadt" ("Capital City", trans. by Jamie Bulloch).
