PASCH Conference in London

Pasch Conference in London, January 2015

On 29 January 2015 the Goethe-Institut London invited PASCH heads and teachers from the four PASCH-schools in the UK to attend the PASCH conference and exchange ideas about the PASCH-programme 2015. The participants took the opportunity to meet Kathrin Lauber, who took over the co-ordination of the project “Schools: Partners for the future” last year September. Karen Dell, PASCH-teacher at Colyton Grammar School in Devon, reports briefly about the day.

Katrin Lauber, our new Pasch co-ordinator from London, invited our school to attend a Professional Development Day and a Conference for the four UK Pasch Schools at the Goethe Institut in South Kensington. The location is one of my favourite London venues as it is directly opposite The Science Museum and just round the corner from The National History and V and A museums!I enjoyed working with fellow German teachers on the theme of using contemporary film and music in lessons during the day and then moved upstairs to the Conference to join our headteacher, Paul Evans, and to meet the heads and staff of the other Pasch Schools from Glasgow, Crewe and Frimley in Surrey. We felt we were in good company as the Bishopbriggs Academy had just been awarded Scottish State Secondary School of the Year status! Julia Coleman was also there to represent the Department for Education and give her views on the development of languages in current education policy.

Discussions involved planning for the exciting “hands-on” German Mathematics exhibition in Gloucester, „Mathe zum Anfassen‟. This was well attended by year 8 students and Sixth Formers who study both maths and German in February. My thanks go to Mrs Hudson for her superb organisation of the trip!

Further Pasch projects in the pipeline include a possible Handball tournament as well as a London Exhibition and workshop on German and Science called „Umdenken- von der Natur lernen. ‟ The Exhibition aims to examine the significance to people of the four elements, water, fire , earth and air and to challenge us to reconsider how mankind is using our raw materials and affecting the balance of nature.
