Dear partners and friends,

We are delighted to be celebrating 50 years of the Goethe-Institut Glasgow with you! Half a century of Scottish-German cultural exchange has seen many new developments – yet many key topics remain the same.

When the Goethe-Institut Glasgow was founded in 1973, women were demanding their place in public life. Environmental issues were being discussed in context of the first oil crisis. Deindustrialisation, migration, and the onset of modern globalisation were reshaping work and life realities both here and in West and East Germany. The United Kingdom, and thus Scotland, had just joined the European Economic Community. Both West and East Germany were accepted to the UN in 1973.

In 2023, multilateralism is being put to the test. Globalisation, climate change and the rapid development of artificial intelligence are raising new questions about how we organise society. Equality for women and minorities continues to be a topic, despite significant progress.

In this context, a vibrant international cultural exchange remains of crucial importance. With its many long-standing partnerships and cooperations with Scottish institutions and partners, the Goethe-Institut Glasgow has been building bridges between Scotland, Germany and its own global network for the past 50 years. Our language and training programs, library and information services, and cultural events contribute to the close relationship between both countries. We are particularly proud of our close collaboration with our French partners. Since 2004, we have been sharing our building at Park Circus with the Alliance Française Glasgow, and between us we represent a special European presence in Scotland.

We would like to invite you to join us in celebrating this cultural richness with a full-day festival on 28 October. Come along to enjoy a wide variety of workshops, concerts, language classes, literary programmes and much more, while we not only look back on the past 50 years, but also look forward to the future!
