New work by Glasgow-based illustrator Rebecca Guthrie

Meet the wonderful animals of fables and fairy tales set free from their narratives

Looking at German fairy tales and French fables, the illustrator Rebecca Guthrie examines the power of animals to act for themselves. In the era of climate crisis, this exhibition and a specially created artist book are ways to invite debate and interaction with the more-than-human world. By casting familiar archetypes in new forms, the artist opens the door to a reexamination of the binaries that reinforce anthropocentrism and nudges us to reinterpret and recognize animals as more than stand-ins for human vices and virtues.

Join us for the exhibition preview and the launch of Rebecca Guthrie's artist book with new animal illustrations on 7th December 7pm to 8:30pm at the Goethe-Institut Glasgow. The artist will be present at the opening and introduce her work. Copies of her book will be available.

This is part of a programme on multispecies storytelling that includes an exhibition by Rebecca Guthrie and the creation of a commissioned artist book with original drawings of European folk animals reinterpreted for our times, a storytelling hour with a professional storyteller, an artist talk by Rebecca Guthrie and a talk and roundtable discussion with Animal Studies scholar Erica Fudge (Strathclyde University) and media artist duo Hörner Antlfinger (Academy of Media Arts, Cologne).

Join us on January 19th for a set of talks and panel discussion on multispecies storytelling.
