Amita Desai

Amita Desai has lived, studied and worked in several countries in the world and was exposed to a rich international experience due to her father’s diplomatic status. She completed her M.A. and M.Ed. from the University of Hamburg, Germany in Education, English Language and American Literature with cum laude; her Masters’ thesis was on Aspects of Non-Violence in the Writings of Martin Luther King, Jr.
She worked for a few years with the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce in Bombay and then at the Goethe-Institut, the Max Mueller Bhavan Bombay till 2001 after which she moved to Hyderabad with her family.
In Hyderabad, after three years of honorary service as the Vice-Principal of the Vidyaranya High School for Boys and Girls, she was invited to start Goethe-Zentrum in Hyderabad in the capacity of Executive Director. She also represented the DFG, German Research Foundation, which is the largest funding agency in Germany for fundamental research work in all field of learning and sciences in Hyderabad from 2006 - 2015.
Several cultural initiatives have been initiated and/or supported by Amita in Hyderabad in the last decade: the Hyderabad Western Music Foundation, the DocuCircle of Hyderabad, Women’s March, Emerging Palette in the visual arts among others. She is one of the festival directors of the Hyderabad Literary Festival.
Amita Desai was appointed in May 2012 as the Honorary Representative of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, Germany as part of the Hamburg Ambassador group.
