FilmED

Films are much more than just a medium. They can inspire, fascinate, move and help understand the world. FilmED will bring film education to new, young audiences.  Irrespective of age or social background, we will provide opportunities for children from kindergarten to high school to engage with and comprehend the world of film.

About the project

The FilmED project works with cultural and educational organizations, film festivals, cinemas and other film institutions. The project will encourage them to share their knowledge of independent cinema, history of filmmaking and film techniques with teachers.

These institutions will develop teaching programs and introduce film education scenarios to educators’ every-day teaching practice. To achieve this, we will create an interactive website that will train educators and provide hands-on guidance and support. The practical, real-life training scenarios that the teachers can directly use in their classroom will be the main asset of this website.

Through this, we aspire to reach thousands of students in Central-Eastern and Southeast Europe with film education, to enhance awareness and knowledge of European film among young audiences. In addition, the training scenarios will leverage the medium of film to promote a deeper understanding of social and political contexts.

To make sure the project gives space to diverse, disadvantaged audience, we will cooperate with various vulnerable group’s workers and include films that address their issues and represent their voices.

Project activities will take place in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, North Macedonia and Germany among other countries.

Target groups

FilmED Institutions © Goethe-Institut

educational & film institutions

Our primary goal is to increase the capacity of both educational and film institutions to develop and provide film education training programs for teachers. As these institutions have already established networks with educators, we will leverage these connections, using a train-the-trainer model to expand film education. With the help of the interactive online platform and the showcase training scenarios presented there, these institutions will get to know how to offer comprehensive and hands-on sharing of their expertise with teachers, so that the educators can introduce or enhance existing film education in their schools or kindergarten – ultimately benefiting young audiences.

We will directly involve:

  • Cultural and educational institutions and NGOs
  • Educational authorities
  • Film festivals
  • Film museums or archives

Educators

Our primary goal is for educators to bring the film education to their schools. Through FilmED, teachers will receive practical training on how to incorporate film education into their classrooms. To ensure relevance and ease of use, educators will be involved in the project from its inception, and they will be trained using real-life scenarios with young audiences.

We will directly involve:

  • school teachers
  • kindergarten teachers
  • social and vulnerable groups’ workers
  • youth workers

Young people

We want young people to have greater film literacy and a better understanding of European film. We believe that film education enables them to gain knowledge of the school subjects through the appealing and thought-provoking medium of film. We will impact this group by working with the participating educators.

We will directly involve:

  • kindergarten children
  • elementary school students
  • high school students
  • young people participating in informal education
  • vulnerable groups, such as minority groups, people with disabilities, LGBTQIA+ individuals, mental health-care communities etc.
