Christopher Ulutupu
Christopher Ulutupu, born in Porirua, raised in Nelson, is a video and performance artist who currently lives in Wellington, New Zealand. He finished his MFA at Massey University, where he explored what it means to be a singular entity in opposite to a live a life as a collective, a unit, as aiga (family), like he experienced in his large Samoan family.
Ulutupu is imploring video and performance to express distance, belonging, borders, points of views, culture and identity. Highlighting the contradictions associated with trying to define questions about ‘Who you are?’ and ‘What is your world view?’.
Being of Samoan, Niuean and partly also German descent, Christopher Ulutupu wants to experience living in Germany as a “tourist“ to create a new body of work based on the landscape and people who live in Leipzig. By observing and investigating the way young and old people occupy public spaces during day and the night, like parks, streets or alleyways, he's interested in looking at differences and similarities between his own communities and people of Leipzig.
