Present Grounds: A Grant for Artistic and Cultural Expression (M/F/D)
This grant aims to foster creative responses to the evolving social and the shifting topographies of culture and community in Myanmar, particularly in light of the challenges communities continue to face in the aftermath of recent events.
Selected individuals or collectives will receive support to develop new presentations—ranging from research papers to creative projects in any format or medium.
We warmly welcome applications not only from established professionals but also from emerging talents across diverse backgrounds and disciplines.
Eligibility and Requirements
Applicants must:- Be artists, musicians, filmmakers, writers, architects, cultural heritage specialists, cultural practitioners, art historians, researchers, or professionals in related cultural fields.
- Propose a project that actively involves or reflects the realities of local communities, developing community-engaged or socially engaged practices.
- Commit to working closely with a community affected by recent events and ensure that the outcome meaningfully addresses their situations or needs.
- Be based in Myanmar or have a demonstrated engagement with Myanmar’s communities and social and cultural contexts.
What We Support
- New productions in any format or medium (visual arts, performance, sound, installation, film, text-based, digital, interdisciplinary, etc.)
- Documentation, archiving, the production of new knowledge, and knowledge exchange.
- Research-based projects that result in a public presentation or cultural output
- Projects that include collaborative or community-based processes

Grant Coverage
- Production costs for the proposed project
- Costs related to the final presentation, showcasing, or public dissemination of the work
- Mobility expenses
- Other costs necessary for the completion of the project
Application Details
Applicants are required to submit in PDF formats (not more than 20 MB):- A short biography (max. 300 words)
- A portfolio or documentation of past work relevant to the open call. (PDF or web links)
- A project proposal (max. 1,000 words) including:
- Community or location of engagement
- Intended format and timeline of production
- Brief budget overview

Timeline
- Application deadline: 18 May 2025
- Grant Announcement: 1st half of June 2025
- Project Completion & Presentation Deadline: 30 November 2025. Reporting submitted by 31 December 2025.

Selection Process
There will be a selection board, which will include representatives from Goethe-Institut Myanmar and invited experts from the art and cultural fields. The board will review the applications and will also be participating in the pitching sessions.Notification of Receipt: All applicants will receive an email confirming that their application has been received.
- First Selection: Shortlisted applicants will be notified by the 1st week of June. They will be invited to the pitching session, which will take place either in person or online. Details and schedules for the pitching session will be communicated via email.
- Final Selection: Final results will be announced by 1st half of June 2025.
