"TAUNGGYI REPRESENT"

We proudly present "TAUNGGYI REPRESENT," a photo book that celebrates the work of U Aung San, also known as Ashok Kumar. This book showcases over forty years of his photography, highlighting the vibrant culture of Taunggyi, the capital of Shan State in northern Myanmar.

U Aung San developed a passion for photography in his family's store. He learned from the photographers who visited and made use of the available materials. Despite limited resources, he excelled with his Nikon FM2 camera, which is famous for its multi-exposure function.

His skill with light, shadow, and creative techniques led to his acclaimed double exposures. "TAUNGGYI REPRESENT" is more than just a photo book. It is a vital record of Taunggyi’s cultural and historical landscape. U Aung San’s photos capture the diversity, traditions, and daily life of the city. His work shows how photography can preserve cultural memory and enhance societal understanding.

We invite you to explore Taunggyi through the eyes of its devoted photographer. "TAUNGGYI REPRESENT" is a must-have for anyone interested in Myanmar’s rich cultural heritage and the art of photography.

Colour Your World

In the past, due to the inability to take colour photographs or the high cost of doing so, photographs were hand-coloured to create a sense of colour. As technology advanced, this practice faded away. To revive this tradition and help children understand colour theory, a workshop titled "Colour Your World: Hand Colouring & Colour Theory Workshop" was held in collaboration with members of the Soke Tan Studio and Myanmar Photo Archive at the Goethe-Institut Myanmar Library on Saturday, July 13th. The workshop was attended by 16 enthusiastic children aged 11 to 15, who showcased their creativity. More interesting programs related to hand colouring will be organized in the future, so stay tuned on the social media of the Goethe-Institut Myanmar and the Myanmar Photo Archive.
