The Project
Goethe-Institut Malaysia organized digital film workshops with Glocal Films from London from May 02, 2023 to July 04, 2023 as part of the Schools: Partners for the Future (PASCH) initiative. In mixed groups, students from the different Malaysian schools in Penang, Selangor and Johor exchanged ideas with their partners* in video-letter format. There, they got to know themselves and each other about personal issues such as I/You, Now/Future, Home/The World, and Fears/Dreams. In this way, they have shared insight into the personally moving, inspiring, and challenging aspects of their lives.
With German as the language of communication and production, students* learned how to use their smartphones in a cinematically targeted and optimized way, write scripts and film narratives, create a shooting schedule, and edit on a mobile app. In the process, they deepened their language skills through speaking, writing, and listening comprehension. Through individual appointments with the workshop leaders, they were able to improve their ideas and pronunciation.
On the last day of the workshop, students watched the video letter exchange together. Then they discussed their different perspectives and strengthened their newly formed friendships.
In a final online film screening, which took place on 04 July 2023 with over 40 participants, the film production was celebrated in the presence of the teachers and PASCH colleagues, followed by a discussion with the invited audience.

The workshop leaders
Silke Beller and Kerstin Rickermann are co-founders of Glocal Films, a German-language film and media organization based in London. The Glocal Films team conceives and directs participatory film projects worldwide in the field of educational cultural work. The participants of the projects become filmmakers and journalists and exchange ideas across countries and continents on current issues that move them.
