Residency Re-Sourced

The Residency Re-Sourced program emerges as a key initiative under the larger umbrella of the Art/Space Negotiations project, first launched by the Goethe-Institut Nigeria in 2022. This project was a pioneering step in addressing a crucial question for African cities: How can spaces for critical art, unbound by commercial pressures, be nurtured and sustained?

Art/Space Negotiations sought to explore how art can thrive in spaces that prioritize long-term cultural and creative development over immediate financial gains. In early 2024, the project was awarded the Excellence and Structural Funds to investigate innovative sustainability models that can enhance creative landscapes in African cities—this breakthrough laid the foundation for the Residency Re-Sourced program.

At the heart of this initiative is the symbolic essence captured in our logo: a bee. Known for its role in regeneration and sustainability, the bee mirrors our mission. Just as bees pollinate ecosystems, fostering growth and renewal, Residency Re-Sourced aims to cultivate creative vitality and foster the revitalization of the art world. This logo represents more than a design—it embodies our commitment to breathing new life into residency spaces across Africa.

Our minimalist logo design reflects the project’s slogan, “Redefining Models for Art Space Sustainability,” emphasizing clarity, purpose, and a focus on sustainable growth for art spaces. Like the endangered bee, which faces threats from urbanization and commercialization, residency spaces are similarly vulnerable. These creative sanctuaries, unlike commercial galleries for example, offer value that transcends immediate financial return, focusing instead on the exchange of ideas, artistic mobility, and cultural enrichment.

Residency Re-Sourced is designed to foster this spirit of sustainability and growth. It brings together art residency spaces across the African continent in a "metalogue"—an evolving, participatory conversation on resourcing and sustaining these essential creative spaces. With a commitment to human capacity building and infrastructural development, this program supports residency spaces as hubs for intra-African and transcontinental mobility and artistic exchange.

Through the collaborative efforts of artists, curators, and cultural institutions, Residency Re-Sourced will create a model for sustainable, resilient, and creatively vibrant spaces in Africa’s future.
