Susanne Altmann mit Christa - Maria Lerm Hayes en Anna Seidl

We are pleased to invite you for a conversation with art historian and curator Susanne Altmann next week on the exciting new publication Pants Wear Skirts: The Erfurt Women Artists’ Group, 1984–1994. The book accompanies the recent exhibition co-curated by Altmann at the nGbK Berlin, which was, to-date, the most extensive examination of the prolific production of the Erfurt Women Artists’ Group. Formed by East German artist Gabriele Stötzer in the early 1980s, the Erfurt group was a space to meet, share experiences and, eventually, to collectively create films, music and fashion together. In November 1989, some of the women in the group (including Stötzer) were also key figures in the first occupation of an Stasi headquarters, which was in the city of Erfurt just after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

On 26 May Altman will be in conversation with Professors Christa-Maria Lerm Hayes and Anna Seidl from the University of Amsterdam about the publication, the exhibition, and the important – if not underacknowledged – history of the women of Erfurt. The conversation is moderated by programme curator Megan Hoetger, and has been conceived within the frame of Altmann’s month-long residency with the Goethe-Institut Rotterdam.
