Colloquy is a 4-episode podcast series which explores how other languages enlarge New Zealand literature written in English. We speak with New Zealand writers, publishers and readers about the role of “world words” in their work and the New Zealand literature they love.
In this third episode of new podcast series "Colloquy" we talk to novelists, poets and essayists who have written works in English while living in countries where English is not the first language.
It has been increasingly documented that losing spatial reference exercises our creativity, leads to insights about ourselves, and builds empathy. What does losing linguistic reference do for the writer? How does living in and through another language enlarge our writing in English?
Wellington writer Pip Adam goes in search of some answers and chats with:
- Novelist Tim Corballis who spent time in Berlin in 2005 at the Berlin Writer’s Residency
- Poet and academic Jake Arthur who is currently living in Madrid, Spain
- Poet Nina Powles who spent time in China last year learning Mandarin
- Essayist and fiction writer Tina Makereti who spent time in Frankfurt as the Weltkulturen Museum Writer in Residence in 2012
- Writer Catherine Chidgey who has lived in Germany, and speaks and reads German
- Poet, essayist and prose writer Hinemoana Baker who was the 2015-2016 recipient of the Berlin Writers Residency and is still living in Berlin
