Colloquy is a 4-episode podcast series which explores how other languages enlarge New Zealand literature written in English. We speak with New Zealand writers, publishers and readers about the role of “world words” in their work and the New Zealand literature they love.

In this first episode of the new podcast series "Colloquy" we talk to novelists, poets and essayists from Aoteraoa New Zealand who write in English -- but also think and live in other languages.

How does speaking another language affect their work? What attracts writers to learning additional languages? And what does it add to their writing?
Wellington writer Pip Adam goes in search of some answers and chats with:

• Fiction writer William Brandt who speaks German, Spanish and Russian 
• Fiction writer and essayist Lawrence Pratchett who’s learning Te Reo Maori
• Poet and academic Jake Arthur who lives in Madrid and speaks Spanish among other languages
• Poet and essayist Chris Price who speaks German and some French
• Poet Nina Powles who spent time in China last year learning Mandarin
• Essayist and fiction writer Tina Makereti who speaks some Te Reo Maori
• Novelist Catherine Robertson who speaks French and Latin and has learnt Russian and German
• Writer Catherine Chidgey who has lived in Germany, and speaks and reads German
