About the films
In the summer of 1990, the Goethe-Institut, the German Cultural Center in Manila under the directorship of Dr. Uwe Schmelter invited two German filmmakers Christian Weisenborn and Michael Wulfes to the Philippines to conduct the Asian Film Documentary workshop. It was held from April 16 to May 19, 1990, at the MOWELFUND Plaza with eleven participating filmmakers. The workshop was organized with the help of the Mowelfund Film Institute, the Philippine Information Agency, the U.P. Film Center, and Lufthansa German Airlines.
The eleven Filipino filmmakers who took part in the workshop were: Arturo Boncato Jr., Catherina Calzo, Ditsi Carolino, Sito Fernandez, Joseph Fortin, Mario Guzman, Cesar Hernando, Jimmy Hobro, Ferdie Manalo, Mylene Segundera and Roel Tan-Torres. Under the technical guidance of the two German filmmakers, the participants collaborated to make an almost-hour-long documentary film on the street children of Metro Manila. The film, “Masakit sa Mata” was shot entirely using a 16 mm camera during the workshop and was completed in 1991. Directors Christian Weisenborn and Michael Wulfes made behind-the-scenes documentation alongside the making of “Masakit sa Mata.” The resulting behind-the-scenes coverage became “Kontext: Manila” which features interviews with Joseph Fortin, Ditsi Carolino, Dr. Uwe Schmelter, and Nick Deocampo.
“Masakit sa Mata” won First Prize at the 5th Gawad CCP Para sa Alternatibong Pelikula at Video in 1991 and a Silver Prize film citation in 1992 by Kritika. Three decades later, the film underwent a digitization process when it was invited to the 26th Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival in 2022 where London-based writer, Andrew Northrop described it as, “… an important film that surpasses its cosmetic state, and one of many highlights in Ji.hlava’s program…” It had its revival screening too in Manila, when it was exhibited to a new audience at the 35th Gawad CCP Alternatibo in 2023.
